Working with/against Capitalists
The question has been raised about how to stop the violent capitalists, those who see much of humanity as disposable labor, who seemingly could not care less if we all dropped dead, as long as their profits kept rolling in.
I think the first thing we need to do is ensure that more people see the stark reality; in the last Gilded Age, robber barons maintained philanthropic efforts, however weak, because society required them to mask the greed.
After the Great Depression, FDR was able to get New Deal programs because “the 1%” of that era feared a revolution by “the 99%”—or enough of them to create real problems. Today, they revel in their greed, and only recently have some followers begun to see the betrayal in the difference between Trumpian rhetoric and Trumpian policies. We need to show the misguided followers—not the enablers, who are 100% on board—just how they were and are being betrayed. I agree that revelatory information on capitalism and public education opportunities to attend are both important and necessary to commuicate both that capitalism is undermining both world citizenry welfare and the living earth itself and that we must find many ways to communicate and build communities that understand, developand practice a wholesome path forward toward eventul replacement.
Adding to Sally's resource recommendation, I am interested in a book discussion of Slow Down: The Degrowth Manifesto by Kohei Saito. It both reveals "Capitalism" and shows a path of replacement. Beyond study groups we need supportive practice groups to bring a true culture change into reality. These are being created throughout society now, but need seeking out as they are often not publicized in conventional media. A study group could also share knowledge on such groups or develop their own.
The UUJEC Board and its current active task forces (Reparations, Healthcare, and Peace, Equity, Climate) are currently working on plans for future programming so suggestions are welcome!
