Cigna owns Express Scripts, the nation’s largest PBM (pharmacy benefits manager), which is being questioned about its contract with TRICARE, the military’s healthcare system. Like United Healthcare, Cigna is vertically integrated, controlling just about every part of a policy-holder’s interaction with the healthcare “system”.
One of our board member reports that the Express Scripts military prescription service to which he has access is too expensive; he prefers to pick up prescriptions at a local fort at no cost.
Of course, he is fortunate to have a local fort, but this does show that there is a reason to be concerned about this private company’s intrusion into the public military healthcare program.
